only young Robert, but that of the whole family.
When 10 years of age, Robert began to attend the
public schools of Carroll county, taught by Mr. E. Thomp¬
son and others. He advanced rapidly while attending
these schools and thus won the admiration of both teach¬
ers and pupils. In 1889 he attended the Grenada Academy
under Prof. P. H. Stephen, after which, in 1891, he entered
