MISS M. A. ALSTON.
The subject of
this sketch was
born near Lex¬
June, 1862. His
son and Mariah
put little Jeffer¬
son in school.
He was kept in
common schools until 1880. At this time he entered
Alcorn A. & M. College, Rodney, Miss., and remained there
two years. In 1885 he entered Rust University, Holly
Springs, Miss. In isss he entered Roger Williams Univer¬
sity, Nashville, Tenn., joined college class proper. In
March 1889 he married Miss Mary W. Holloway, a very ac¬
complished lady, a niece of Hon. S. P. Hurst, and a student
of Tougaloo University, He returned to Roger Williams
University in 1890, to finish his course, this being his
senior year. In this school-year he indellibly stamped
the fact of his scholorship and oratory upon the minds of
the colleges of Tennessee and the reading public generally.
