feed the world ten thousand years, and her territory ample
enou'-dt to give, eyr-rv human being a homestead on the face
ci. the globe, wh.'es value would dety dollars and centa.
Can any sane man presume for a moment that Providence
will allow these garnered treasures to lie in the bowels of the
earth forever. The idea is preposterous in the extreme. No
sir; the time will come when the negro race will thirst for
those climes as the hart does for the water brook, and om-
nicient skill will provide the means for his importation. Mr.
McQueen, when speaking of the superstition which infested
that country, made the following remark ; " It is in Africa
this evil must be rooted out—by African hands and African
exertions chiefly that it can he destroyed." Win. Pitt, the
great English statesman, in a gust of patriotic eloquencei
uses the following language : " We may live to behold the
nations of Africa engaged in the calm occupations of indus¬
try, and in the pursuits of a just and ligitimate commerce ;
we may behold the beams of science and philosophy break
ing in upon their land, which at some happier period, in still
later times, may blaze with full lustre, and, joining their in¬
fluence to that of pure religion, may illuminate and invigo¬
rate the most distant extremities of that immense continent.''
Mr. Pitt speaks as if touched by the same finger of pro¬
phetic inspiration which was hovering over David, when he,
by a higher claim to infalibilit}r, stood gazing in the future
and exclaimed "Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands to
God : Sing, ve kingdoms of the earth, sing praises to the
Lord; for they shall drink at noon the palm's rich nectar, and
He dowii at eve in the green pastures of remembered days,
and walk" to wonder am! weep no more on Congo's moun¬
tain coast, or Guinea's golden shore.''
Africa will rise as sure as ere a nation rose through trans-
verses and inexplieabilities the path may lie. But as
Wards worth says, while soaring on the wings of the muses:
'In the unreasoning progress of the world—
A wiser spirit is at work,
A better eye than ours sees."
