friends secured in such separation of races. A real friend comes to
our rescue in time of need. These people were set apart in 1870
with nothing but their church buildings. No schools for the
training of their people. After existing nearly a quarter of a
century how many schools, etc., has the Methodist Episcopal
Church South helped them to build ? Their friends among the
Mother Church instead of increasing have decreased. On the
other hand, as a result of union, our friends have not been in
name, but in deed and fact. The monuments of their true friend¬
ship are towering heavenw ard all over the Southland. Where are
those, as a result of the friendship of the Methodist Episcopal
Church South to the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church in
America? These people have been set apart to nearly starve and
die. The colored people's friends can only multiply in the union
of the two races. In such union the strong have better oppor¬
tunity to find out the needs of the weak, because they are both
one and are concerned about the elevation and happiness of each
other. Yes, they are sheep of the same fold.
(9.) It would unite the races on a higher plane. What, unite
the races living together upon a plane something similar to the
union of the United States, England, France, Germany,
toward each other ? Such union would bring the white
and colored Methodists in touch with each other about every
Eiumenical Conference. If that is a reason that separation and
union are reccommended, God forbid that they ever take place
Ihe highest plane of the union of the races is assimilation. Let
us buiy prejudice End have that union, and the world will be soon
conquered for Christ Jesus the Lord.
(10.) Such union would prove a blessing to all. It may prove
a blessing to the whites, because they have nearly everything. But
who believes (those who have the elevation and happiness of all
